Fans chanting is condemned by Ibrox chiefs

RANGERS said that they were “disappointed” by what they described as “inappropriate” chanting from their supporters during the team’s 3-1 win against Berwick Rangers at Shielfield Park.

ESPN, which broadcast the Third Division match live, apologised on air for an outbreak of sectarian chanting during the first half. Northumbria Police later confirmed that three spectators had been arrested, two for sectarian offences.

It is understood Rangers will assist any police inquiry into criminal acts and they will ban from Ibrox anyone found responsible.

“The club is disappointed by certain outbursts of inappropriate singing by a section of the support at Berwick,” said a spokesman. “Our fans have been excellent this season both home and away and we do not want to see this tarnished.”

Ally McCoist, the Rangers manager, said: “I didn’t know anything about it until I came in after the game. Our supporters have been nothing short of sensational home and away this season. If they were a little bit out of order today, I apologise. We don’t need it within the club or Scottish football. I am very hopeful it is a one-off and will not happen again.

“I was told the club had issued a statement and I back the club 100 per cent. They have been fabulous throughout the season and if there was some unsavoury chanting then they have let themselves down a little bit. But I would be very hopeful this is an isolated incident and we will move on.

“Any time I looked across the fans looked joyful enough, bouncing up and down. I think we have all come a long way in recent years, there is no doubt about that, and we have to continue the good work we’ve done before. It’s like anything else, you probably will get a couple of steps back to move forward again, but I am hopeful it’s no more than that.”
