Dickensian Market organisers issue appeal for new recruits

THE small team of volunteers who have organised Berwick’s Dickensian Market for the past five years have called on new faces to come forward to replace them.

Yvonne and Charlie Balfour and Viv and Stewart Robson have reiterated their intention to stand down from Berwick Events Group at its annual general meeting in March.

Yvonne, speaking at a meeting of Berwick Town Council, said: “We’re definitely retiring at the AGM and we’re not certain what will happen then but we hope the Dickensian Market will continue and we will try to support it.”

Viv added: “We’ve put a lot of work into the event over the last few years but the time has come to step aside and let someone else have a go. Hopefully a new committee will be formed at the AGM.”

The positive news is that the event is on a much more stable financial footing than it has been in the past, helped in no small measure by the huge success of last month’s event which attracted thousands of visitors - and local residents - into the town centre.

Stewart, the group’s secretary, said: “It’s in a much healthier state financially this year than it has been in the past so hopefully that will be an incentive for others to come on board.”

The out-going committee were praised for their efforts by the town council’s events committee.

Coun Jennifer Waterhouse, chairman, said: “I thought the Dickensian Market was an amazing success this year so thanks to everyone involved.

“I know there were plenty of headaches and sleepless nights in the lead up to the event, and one or two minor problems beforehand, but the end result was fantastic. There were lots of people there.”

Coun Jim Smith said: “It’s hard for a small committee to keep going every year. New faces might come up with some new ideas.”
