Crumbling road to be resurfaced

editorial image

THE crumbling approach to Golden Square roundabout in Berwick town centre is to be resurfaced on Friday, January 11 by Northumberland County Council.

Large patches of the road have disintegrated badly in recent weeks, particularly on the northbound approach to the roundabout after crossing the Royal Tweed Bridge.

A council spokesman said: “Resurfacing work will be carried out there on Friday, 11 January. It should take one day, weather permitting.”

Resurfacing of the roundabout also took place in the summer prior to the arrival of the Olympic torch but holes quickly began to reappear in the surface afterwards.

The poor condition of the road has been the subject of much discussion on social networking sites.

Local resident Alison Fairbairn posted on the Berwick Deserves Better facebook page to bemoan the ‘nightmare’ potholes, while others have vented their anger at the condition of roads in other parts of north Northumberland.

Julia Ferrell added: “Osborne Road leading onto Ladywell Road needs seen to badly. It’s as bad as Golden Square.”
