County council welcomes rural policy statement
Cllr Jeff Reid
The Rural Statement 2012, a document which lists the government’s various policy initiatives and programmes of investment targeted at rural communities, has been welcomed by the Lib Dem administration running England’s most sparsely populated county.
Coun Jeff Reid, leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “The Lib Dems running Northumberland County Council recognise that warm words aren’t enough to protect our rural communities, which is why we are investing in rural broadband, services and infrastructure. We can’t do it alone, though, and having central government backing up our efforts with targeted policies and investment is welcome.
“Government, whether local or national, cannot alone give rural areas the sustainable future they need - that’s why it’s so important to listen to those communities. The effort the government is making to do so will go a long way towards winning the trust of people in rural Northumberland, whose needs have been ignored and neglected for too long under successive governments.”
Last week the Office for National Statistics stated the cost of living for families in rural communities is over £50 per week higher than those in urban areas.
