NORTHUMBERLAND County Council is looking to the voluntary and community sector to assist in administering a £1 million government fund which supports those facing crisis in their lives.

In an innovative approach the authority is currently in talks with the sector to come up with bold new proposals that will link people in need to a wider range of support services.

The fund is administered to people on benefit who find themselves in crisis or facing difficult changes in their lives, for example those coming out of care or those who have experienced a violent relationship break up.

Historically, the responsibility of its distribution fell to Job Centre Plus; however it has now been transferred to local authorities as the government feels they better understand the needs of their communities.
