Concerns raised about Spittal splash park costs

CONCERNS have been raised that the maintenance bill for Spittal splash park could end up being higher than expected because of the large volumes of sand being blown on to it from the nearby beach.

The splash park is currently the responsibility of Northumberland County Council which has been carrying out almost daily cleaning.

But Coun Ivor Dixon has expressed concerns that Berwick Town Council will be saddled with unforeseen costs when it takes over maintenance.

He said: “With the bad weather and high winds we’ve been having recently the sand has frequently been blowing into the splash park and a county council wagon has been in there virtually every morning power cleaning it. I’m worried it could be costly for the town council.”

Town clerk Sue Finch revealed the Service Level Agreement (SLA) which will see responsibilty for the splash park transfer from the county to the town council is still being finalised.

“It’s almost there but we’re having some extra information built into it by the project administrator,” she told members of the environment and regeneration committee.

Problems with the cabinet which houses the works are also still to be resolved before the transfer is completed. The splash park suffered several problems in its first season.
