Community cannot speak highly enough of Berwick midwives

THE head of midwifery at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has thanked Berwick midwives for their professionalism during the temporary closure of the town’s maternity unit.

It was stated at last week’s public meeting to discuss the future of the unit that the closure, and some of the subsequent coverage, had knocked staff members’ confidence.

But Janice McNichol said: “There is absolutely no doubt that our midwives in Berwick do a really fantastic job and I would like to thank them personally for the professionalism they have shown throughout this difficult period.

“In the public research undertaken by NHS North of Tyne local women stated, very clearly, that the best thing about their maternity care was the midwives who looked after them.

“This is testament to the dedication of each and every one of our Berwick midwives and they should all be rightfully proud of the care they give to local women throughout their pregnancies.”

The Advertiser constantly hears from women full of praise for the care they have received at the hands of Berwick’s midwives. “I cant speak highly enough of all the staff at the unit,” said local mum Sara Wood.

“I was due to have my daughter at Wansbeck and went into labour two weeks early on a bank holiday weekend. Whilst Wansbeck tried to defer me from going in, Berwick midwives helped calm me and gave me relaxation tips over the phone until my waters broke.

“Luckily I was able to go to Berwick – as soon as I arrived I was taken to the delivery suite, examined and told I was ready to push.”

Sara’s baby Lilly arrived just 15 minutes later. “I can honestly say I didn’t expect to be giggling with the midwives whilst labouring but they were brilliant, professional, and their care and warmth shines through from pregnancy to labour and aftercare,” she said.

Amy Dalrymple described the Berwick staff who dealt with her over three pregnancies as “amazing”. She said: “They are professional yet friendly, and the care they give is very personal.

“I always felt the unit was a safe environment and really wanted to give birth there, but the guidelines stated as my baby was a little small I had to go to Wansbeck. I hated staying there afterwards, it was hot and busy and uncomfortable – I couldn’t wait to get back to the friendly and personal care you get at Berwick. I cannot fault them, they are all fabulous!”

Grandmother Dorothy Case added: “I had two of my children at Castle Hills and two of my daughters gave birth at BMU.

“I have to say both myself and my daughters have nothing but praise for the midwives both past and present for care given before and after birth which is second to none.

“They are the best midwives you could ever meet; kind, attentive, caring. They put themselves out for you day or night. They should be so proud of themselves. They do a brilliant job.”
