Bounds secured for 403rd time

HUNDREDS of spectators lined the streets of Berwick to witness the historic Riding of the Bounds on Tuesday.
Chief marshal Katrina Lewis, riding Larry, led the 57-strong contingent on the 15-mile patrol of the town’s ancient boundaries to make sure they were secure from marauding Scots.
She said: “It’s an absolutely amazing feeling to be leading the ride. It’s something I’ve been dreaming about for weeks but it hit home when I was bathing the horse yesterday.”
It was also a relief to see the sunshine, albeit accompanied by a cool breeze, after the wet weather of recent weeks.
The horses and riders gathered at The Parade before moving to Berwick Barracks where they were greeted by civic dignitaries and the riders indulged in the traditional taking of the stirrup cup.
Mayor Alan Bowlas said: “This has to be the highlight of the year. It’s a magnificent occasion and long may the tradition continue.”
Among the riders was Ed Swales, with Chester, following their 120-mile week-long cross country trip from Gretna.
“It was all to raise awareness of the ride and our campaign to keep the KOSB colours in Berwick,” he said. “It was hard work at times but it was good fun.”
The contingent then made their way to the town hall where pupils from Prior Park First School gave an excellent rendition of The Berwick Song despite just two days’ notice. The riders returned shortly after 3pm to pronounce the bounds safely intact.
Best turned out senior was Lyn Manderson from Eyemouth on Leah, best junior was Shauna McCombie from Kelso, on Kelly. Best turned out cob was Rachel Martin from Spittal, on Mikey.
