BERWICK Town Council is making a big effort on the marketing front to encourage more tourists to visit.

It has ordered a print run of 15,000 copies of its 2013 events leaflet, featuring highlights such as the Riding of the Bounds and Spittal Seaside Festival.

A further 30,000 copies of a smaller format version will also be printed that can be handed out at tourist information centres for potential visitors.

Both leaflets have been rebranded in the same style as the Visit Northumberland website and carry the ‘Independent Spirit’ slogan.

In addition, Berwick will be featured in the new Northumberland holiday brochure and is taking out three pages in the visitor guide being published by the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty partnership.

Town clerk Sue Finch said: “We’re pushing out quite a lot of marketing and hopefully it will pay dividends.”

Preview copies of the events leaflet were available for tourist related businesses to take away from the leaflet distribution day held in Alnwick on Tuesday.

The rest will be printed over the next few weeks to avoid the problems of last year when the leaflet was not out until late spring.

The smaller format version is a new initiative made possible thanks to assistance from Northumberland County Council.

“It will give potential visitors a taster of what Berwick has to offer,” said Miss Finch “They will be handed out to people making enquiries about Berwick.”

The council is also looking at getting the leaflet translated into foreign languages.

“We’re looking at getting them translated into Dutch and German which could be a good way of attracting tourists who arrive on the ferry into Newcastle.”

Work is also being carried out on the Visit Berwick website.

The council is also fully in support of a new Berwick Walking Festival planned for Easter 2014 (see page 7).

Key dates over the next few months include: May 1 - Riding of the Bounds; May 12 - Spirit of Sport; May 26 - Party at the Parade; June 15-16 - Spittal Gala; July 18 - Mouth of the Tweed Festival and Tweedmouth Feast crowning; July 21 - Floats parade; July 26-29 - Berwick Arts and Crafts Festival; August 1 - Minden Day; August 4 - Berwick lifeboat fete; August 10-11 Spittal Seaside Festival; September 7-8 - Berwick Food Festival; September 25-29 - Berwick Film Festival; October 10-13 - Frontier Music Festival; December 13 - Spittal Christmas fair.
