Berwick Middle School is nominating pupils to be in with a chance of representing the north east of England in South Korea, Mexico or America.

Nominees from a number of schools across the region will attend a Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV) selection day in Newcastle this month, where delegates will be chosen to go abroad with the charity.

Last year Berwick Middle School pupil William Dalgleish was one of the lucky few to be chosen.

William was one of 12 children selected to represent the north east at villages in Portugal, Japan, and South Korea; four children travelled to each village, along with a team leader.

William travelled to Portugal with international charity CISV, which was set up in 1952 to help foster international relations.

Through the scheme, eleven-year-old children - the youngest age considered practical while hopefully young enough not to have any preconceived ideas about other countries - stay at the camps for four weeks, with other children from around the world.

Last year there were delegations in Portugal from US, Mexico, Brazil, South Korea, Israel, Senegal, Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and of course Portugal.

The delegates interact together in educational and play activities. They stay mainly at the camps with a few trips out to the surrounding area, and usually spend a weekend with a host family.

William went to Benfica, and is still in touch with a Portuguese family who looked after him. He is also in regular contact with some of the other children who attended the camp via Facebook and emails.

Led by Emma Sadler from Belsay, William’s team of four included James Ritchie from Gosforth, Morgan Brown from Ponteland, and Frances Bell from Hepscott.

Some schools have already nominated children to attend this month’s regional selection day, and others will be doing so soon.

Berwick Middle School have been sending children for many years, and are currently selecting the delegates to the selection day for this year’s CISV camps.
