Bankhill revamp planned to tie in with park project

Plans to refurbish the Bankhill area of Berwick could form an extension to the lottery funded parks project underway on the riverside.

While Castle Vale/Castle Dene and Coronation Park are being revamped thanks to a £900,000 grant, the area under the Royal Tweed Bridge is not included in the plans.

Berwick Town Council has therefore expressed interest in tidying it up and is to sound out support from the likes of the civic society and preservation trust.

Mayor John Robertson said: “We’re talking about the area between the rowing club and the bottom of Bankhill. It’s one of the key entrances to the parks so it would be nice to do it.”

Northumberland County Council is currently considering the proposed transfer of the former ladies’ toilet on Bankhill to the town council for use in association with the parks project. Berwick Preservation Trust is understood to be interested in helping towards its restoration.

Coun Robertson said: “We know that the civic society has talked in the past about restoring the original jubilee lamp and the preservation trust is interested in the former ladies’ toilet block on Bankhill.

“If we can put a partnership together we could complete that section of New Road which, together with the parks project, would mean the whole stretch from the bottom of Bankhill to the railway bridge would be done. ”

Coun Isabel Hunter, speaking at the council’s environment and regeneration committee, said: “It would be great to complete that part of the riverside. Now we just need to see how much interest there is from potential partners.”

Coun Flora Simpson added: “If it’s not done it will look a complete mess, especially when compared with the neighbouring parks.”

English Heritage has made no objection to the plan.
