A PARTNERSHIP in Wooler is working overtime to help residents feel safe and secure in their homes this January.

Crime prevention officers will be visiting Berwick Borough Housing tenants in the area to identify additional measures that can be taken to help prevent crimes such as burglary.

Elderly residents moved from Horsdenside sheltered housing are among those being visited, in a bid to improve confidence in their new homes. Wooler Parish Council will fund any recommendations while Berwick Borough Housing will install any items suggested; one of the more pressing ideas to date has been additional security lighting.

Parish council chair Alfreda Hindmarch explained: “We are aiming to help as many Berwick Borough Housing tenants, including those recently rehomed from Horsdonside, to install any additional security measures both the resident and local crime prevention officers feel necessary.”

Bernie Hogg, operations manager at Berwick Borough Housing, said: “This initiative is great in more ways than one; it ensures our customers feel safe and secure in their homes but in addition it helps us prioritise where improvements can be made in our other properties across the area in future.”

Neighbourhood officer Mark Lynn said that Wooler was a very safe place to live with a low crime rate.

But he added: “I was made aware of several elderly residents who felt vulnerable in their homes as a result of their own personal circumstances.

“This initiative is a great example of the police, parish council and local housing association working together to improve the quality of life of those concerned.”
