Anger voiced over rusting cabinet in splash park
Spittal Splash Park
Councillors believe contractors SSP should be called back in to replace the rusting cabinet at Spittal splash park.
The cabinet, which houses the control panels for the electricity and water supplies, was only installed 18 months ago but is corroding badly.
Coun Clive Routledge said: “We have a situation where what was sold was not fit for purpose. They knew it was for a seaside location and what was required of it but they have put something substandard in.”
Coun Alan Bowlas added: “Spittal splash park has been a problem since day one and I think the contractor should come back and replace the cabinet free of charge.”
The council has already agreed to fund the future maintenance and running costs of the splash park so is keen for the cabinet to be replaced. Further talks are planned with Spittal Improvement Trust which raised the funds for the splash park.
It is estimated that the repainting of the cabinet would cost £1,700 and its replacement would be more.
“I don’t think we should be putting money into it,” said Coun Routledge. “That money should be withheld from the contractor’s final payment until it’s sorted out.”
The splash park, which cost £150,000, opened last May but has suffered a number of glitches since then.
