£5m investment scheme for new houses in Berwick

MORE than fifty new, affordable homes are to be built in Berwick over the next two years as part of a £5million investment scheme.

Four Housing Group, the parent company of Berwick Borough Housing, announced the £5m investment into affordable housing in Berwick this week.

In partnership with Lomond Group, Four Housing Group will begin building 40 affordable new homes to the west of the existing Highcliffe estate this summer.

The proposed development will provide a range of family housing for affordable rent and shared ownership, as well as ten bungalows for the older people within the community.

Paul Tanney, chief executive at Four Housing Group, said: “Investing in new developments in Berwick is a key priority for us as the demand for affordable housing is high.”

The group secured almost £1m in funding in partnership with the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Northumberland County Council, with the remaining £4m being met from the organisation’s private borrowings.

Outline planning permission was previously approved for the creation of 150 residential units on land at Springhill, Spittal.

Since taking over the management of Berwick Council’s housing stock in 2008, Four Housing Group has supported and invested in the delivery of 53 new affordable homes across north Northumberland.

The not-for-profit housing provider has also completed refurbishments including new kitchens and bathrooms in almost 2,000 homes as part of a £27million, four-year investment programme under the Government’s Decent Homes Standards.

In addition to the scheme in Spittal, Four Housing Group will build 16 two bedroom apartments in central Berwick, designed specifically for older people.

Mr Tanney said: “The focus is on providing quality and energy efficient accommodation to enable independent living.

“The new apartments will be fit for the future needs of an ageing population in north Northumberland, incorporating a flexible layout and telecare and telehealth technology such as personal alarms and health-monitoring devices.”

To learn more about Four Housing Group’s planned investment in Spittal, residents can go along to a drop-in at the Jubilee Community Centre between 3pm-7pm on Wednesday, March 20.
