THE new healthcare commissioning group for Northumberland has been given the go-ahead after passing a rigorous authorisation process.

NHS Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been assessed as an organisation ready to take on the responsibility for the planning and purchasing of healthcare and services for the people of the county, and will take over responsibilities from NHS North of Tyne in April.

It will be responsible for a budget of £410m to plan and purchase healthcare and health services for the people of Northumberland.

Dr Alistair Blair, chief clinical officer for NHS Northumberland CCG, said: “We are delighted that NHS Northumberland CCG has passed such a rigorous authorisation process.

“We were praised for our strong leadership team which ensures our CCG is in a strong position to take on the challenges of commissioning healthcare and health services.

“This is a credit to our staff who have worked hard to achieve this fantastic result.”

He added: “We know that taking over from the current commissioners, NHS North of Tyne, in April will be a real challenge but we’re well placed to carry out our new responsibilities and to make changes to support the further health improvement of local people in the county.”

Assessors from the NHS Commissioning Board (CB), which is the body nationally accountable for the outcomes achieved by the NHS, also praised the CCG for its innovative best practice in many areas, in particular around patient centred commissioning which showed the CCG was working collaboratively with providers.

A panel visit was also made to explore NHS Northumberland CCG’s readiness to take on its new responsibilities.
