Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith visited the site of the new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital a year after the start of building work on the site.

Sir Alan Beith, alogn with fellow MPs Ian Lavery, Mary Glindon and Ronnie Campbell, were given a tour of the building and heard how emergency care consultants and specialists in a range of conditions will work at the Cramlington site.

They also heard that the diagnostics department will be located within the A&E department making sure specialists get test results quicker allowing them to start treating their patients earlier.

Experts in emergency care are on record as saying that early access to a specialist quickly will mean better outcomes for patients

The hospital will be the first of its kind in the county dedicated to providing emergency care when it opens in 2015.

Separating emergency care from planned tests and operations will also have benefits for patients at our general hospitals

Northumbria Healthcare is leading the way in changing the way emergency care is delivered and the new hospital model will deliver care in a manner that is closely aligned to the standards outlined in a recent review by Sir Bruce Keogh

The building is the largest construction project underway in the North East and over the last year more than 400 people have been employed on the site and over £40 million has been ploughed into the local economy.

Jim Mackey, chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said: “We started planning for this hospital seven years ago and it is fantastic to see it progressing so quickly now.

“Our local MPs were impressed by the modern building and how their constituents will receive the best care possible by our specialist teams.”
