A NATIONAL project to further improve the quality of care provided to elderly patients in Northumberland and North Tyneside has been launched.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s work on the issue helped it win £420,000 from independent charity The Health Foundation - making it one of only nine NHS organisations across the country to secure a share of £4.6m funding.

The three-and-a-half year project, in partnership with Age UK North Tyneside, will focus on improving the recruitment and training of staff, the patient environment and patient experience.

People involved in the project nationally and at the trust came together to celebrate the work and look forward to the planned initiatives which will really focus on the needs of the elderly.

Annie Laverty, director of patient experience at the trust, said: “This event is just the start of this exciting project which gives us additional resources to really make a difference for some of the most vulnerable people in our care.

“The project is a ringing endorsement of the work we’ve been carrying out and the grant will help us build on those strong foundations.

“Over the next three-and-a-half years we will be working with corporate and clinical teams to give them support and training to better understand the complex needs of elderly people.

“It is a real coup that we are only one of a handful of organisation to have received this award and we look forward to making a real difference to the patients we serve.”
