Cancer charity presents cheque for £16,000 to research team

THREE members of the Berwick branch of Cancer Research UK presented a cheque for £16,000 to Dr Jim Allan, senior lecturer at the Newcastle Cancer Centre.

Chairman Peter Herdman, secretary Dorothy Wakenshaw and committee member Thelma Thompson handed the money over.

It has been raised over the past 12 months through fetes and collections. Members of the public have also given generously in memory of loved ones.

Dr Allan, who had been approached to suggest a piece of equipment with which Berwick could identify, chose a tissue microarrayer.

These allow multiple samples of tissue to be scanned in a short space of time. Instead of painstaking work over many days, microscopic samples can be examined and the results are added to the knowledge of different cancers.

The Berwick contingent was shown around the laboratory and met Dr Jennifer Jackson who said this piece of equipment will really speed up investigations.

Dr Allan was also able to explained the complexities of using donated tissue.

He also commented on how important it is for funding to be raised so that research can continue, thanking the people of Berwick for their continued interest and support.

After the presentation, Joanne, local coordinator for Cancer Research UK, thanked out-going chairman Peter Herdman for his 15 years at the helm and gave him a certificate showing that over that time the Berwick branch had donated £307,000 to be used by the Newcastle research team.

She also thanked the Berwick committee and public for being so generous and allowing further research to take place.
