App a day keeps doctors up to date

NORTHUMBRIAN GPs are now able to direct patients to specialists at the push of a button following the release of a special iPhone app.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust launched the new app, ‘Clinical Information Xchange’ or ‘CiiX’, to help GPs access real time information about its many clinics, consultants and specialist services.

The first of its kind in the NHS, the free app has already been downloaded over 250 times, allowing GPs immediate, up-to-date information and better links with Northumbria Healthcare clinicians.

Users can access referral information and even referral forms, making their recovery much simpler.

Dr Jane Lothian, Clinical Director at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust commented: “The app means we can quickly find the specialists to talk to and have a direct dialogue to agree the most appropriate care for our patients.

“GPs are busy people seeing hundreds of patients and anything that makes it easier for us to make a referral to the right specialist is very welcome indeed.”

The app can be downloaded to an iPhone or iPad and is available online at http://gp.northumbria.nhs.uk.
