The Douglas-Hume wedding in April 1964

Fifty years ago, on April 2, 1964, Meriel Douglas-Home, daughter of the then Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home of The Hirsel got married. Coldstream had never known a wedding quite like it.

More than a thousand people lined the street outside St Mary’s and All Souls as Meriel wed Adrian Derby and dashed to their black limousine.

At the reception following the service, four people, including the cook charged with the occasion and Sir Alec’s personal detective, were stuck in a lift for several minutes, while a BBC reporter gave a running commentary.
