SWAN notes

THE last few weeks have been really quite hectic trying to find room for the number of little hedgehogs that we have this year.

Last year we just had a handful but this year we have 24. All of them are too small to hibernate although some may be allowed to go into outside pens later to have a short time asleep. Two of our volunteers (who obviously did not have enough to do!) worked out that each hog would cost £90 to keep for the winter. Food costs are about £50 and heating, laundry etc. account for the other £40.

Realising their calculations were correct they thought it would be an idea to find sponsors for the little spiky creatures. So, if anyone would like to sponsor feeding a hog for a month say, £10 would do it, call in and see how it is doing on the food you have paid for.

Alternatively as we feed them with cat or dog food (meat varieties only) dried mealworms and sultanas with a side of chopped peanuts, if you could donate any of these items we would be delighted. I should add that the meaty food should be in jelly or loaf form as the hedgehogs always walk through their dinner before they eat it and the gravy varieties make a mess and I do mean a mess! There is usually someone at the shed between 9.30am and 11.30am so call in then.

We have been donated a lovely wooden rocking horse and a beautiful knitted Christmas post box and snowman. They are on display in the Wool Shop window in Castlegate. These are the prizes in our Christmas raffle and tickets can be bought there or from the shed. Many thanks to Eileen for putting them in the window.

I will catch you up on all the other casualties we have next time, it’s Graeme next week.
