Heatherslaw Corn Mill has started a mail order service for its delicious flours and oat products.
Although Heatherslaw flour and oats have always been available from the gift shop at Heatherslaw, they can now also be purchased from local village shops, farm shops and two outlets in Berwick.
However, demand from customers who live further afield is increasing all the time so a web-based mail order service offering its full product range has been set up in response.
The Heatherslaw Mill Recipe Book is also being updated with a series of recipes which are user-friendly, especially for children or people with little baking experience and those who are sensitive to gluten.
“There is increasing demand for quality stoneground flours, and particularly spelt”, explained Lord Joicey who is chairman of the Heatherslaw Mill Trust.

The full range: stoneground wholemeal flours (of wheat, spelt and rye), oat flakes, oatmeals and muesli, available in bags of 500g, 1kg and 2kg.
Lord Joicey added: “Spelt is an ancestor of modern wheat but much more digestible if you have difficulty with gluten. Rye flour too is now used more frequently and is the staple ingredient of the delicious breads of northern and central Europe. Squares of thinly cut rye bread spread with crème fraiche and topped with chopped dill and a slice of smoked salmon are unbeatable.”
Local grains and cereals have been milled at Heatherslaw for over 700 years. Today the mill uses machinery from the 19th century to do the job, milling high quality stoneground flours daily. A range of oat products, milled in the Border town of Kelso, is also available.
