Staff at Wooler butcher pass food safety exams
Staff at T R Johnson butchers in Wooler, Alan Cowan, Ben Redpath, Derrick McDougal and Diana McDougal, have all been awarded level 3 food safety supervision for manufacturing.
STAFF at T R Johnson Butchers in Wooler High Street have excelled by passing national food safety exams.
The business took the unusual step of putting all employees through a higher level of training designed particularly for supervisory positions.
All staff achieved a first time pass in the nationally recognised examination taken at the end of the course, giving them a level 3 award in food safety supervision for manufacturing.
Management made a commitment to training undertaken by Lowick-based Marriner Business Support.
Rob Marriner, who delivered the training, said: “It is unusual for a relatively small business to train all staff to such a high level. Johnson’s clearly wish to ensure they are able to manage all stages of food preparation and sale, in a safe manner, and they are now in a position to do so.”
In another move to assure food safety, T R Johnson has recently started to offer its customers Dexter Beef, which is fully traceable and comes from local suppliers.
Derrick McDougal, joint proprietor at T R Johnson, said: “We acted before recent incidents involving horse meat, for traceability of our meat suppliers, and to ensure all those preparing and handling food are highly trained.
“As a result we are confident customers will be fully assured about the safety of our products.”
