AN innovative blood-tracking system is to be introduced at Berwick Infirmary to ensure the right blood goes to the right patient.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust is introducing the system at five of its hospitals to enhance patient safety.

The trust has selected healthcare technology company MSoft eSolutions’ Bloodhound solution, which controls access to and from all blood fridges, providing enhanced security and safety by ensuring that only approved staff are allowed to access blood.

The firm’s blood-tracking solution provides positive identification of users and patients and in depth auditing of all bloods across each and every stage of the transfusion process – to help get the right blood into the right patient.

Matt McAlister, managing director of MSoft eSolutions, said the new system would “significantly” enhance patient safety.

He said: “We are delighted to have been selected by Northumbria to provide the trust with our Bloodhound system which will significantly enhance patient safety.

“We won the contract as a result of having been chosen to be part of the NHS Supply Chain Purchasing Framework.

“This is a busy trust with over 1200 beds which has rightly recognised the importance of harnessing the very best in technology as part of its overall patient care.

“Hospitals need to know that the technology they invest in will provide them with the sophisticated, efficient and, most importantly, secure and safe systems they require.”

The system will be introduced immediately across five of the trust’s network of nine hospitals; Berwick, Wansbeck, North Tyneside, Hexham and Alnwick.

The Bloodhound system will also be integrated into the £75million specialist emergency care hospital due to open in East Cramlington in 2014.
