Hen and Chickens Hotel could get a new lease of life

DEVELOPERS are planning to transform the Hen and Chickens Hotel in Berwick into an Italian restaurant.

The Grade II listed building, on the corner of Sandgate and Palace Street, has been closed for some three years and fallen into a bad state of disrepair.

However, a planning application to bring it back into use as ‘Amoretti’ has now been submitted to Northumberland County Council by Ashington-based estate agent Mike Rogerson.

The application is for full planning approval and listed building consent for alterations and an extension to the hotel, required for the proposed layout of the restaurant.

An artist’s impression of how it will look from the front appears to show little change, apart from the change of name and addition of English, Scottish and Italian flags.

A report accompanying the planning application by Coldstream-based Ross Architectural Consultants said: “It is proposed to enhance the hotel with the introduction of a new kitchen, dining areas, toilet facilities and en-suite bedrooms at the upper level.

“The design seeks to preserve and enhance the character of the listed building with the conservation area of Berwick.

“The proposed dining area extension, contained within the private rear courtyard, has been designed to compliment the improved finishes to the rear buildings.

“It is proposed to resurface the rear exterior walls, including the brickwork area, and regularise the colour scheme.”

The decision is likely to be taken by county planning officers.
