General Mills Berwick, manufacturer of Britain’s best-selling pastry brand Jus-Rol, recently offered free skills training to a group of jobseekers.
The event was part of IGD’s Feeding Britain’s Future campaign to help tackle youth unemployment throughout the UK.
IGD – a food and drink industry charity – attracted high profile backing for its Skills for Work Month 2013 from the worlds of business and politics, including from Prime Minister David Cameron, as more than 100 companies took part in the scheme.
Eleven young people spent a whole day with the company, during which they were given a tour of Jus-Rol’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on the Tweedside Trading Estate, as well as attending special CV and interview clinics.
The day was a great opportunity to help young people gather the skills they need to find a job, and hopefully one in the food and drink industry, which – according to figures from IGD – employs 3.7 million people in the UK, equivalent to one in every seven workers.
General Mills UK, Ireland & Nordic MD Jim Moseley, welcomed the jobseekers to their training day via video link from the company’s UK headquarters in Uxbridge and told them about the unique opportunities in the food and drink industry.
He said: “Feeding Britain’s Future is a great campaign to be involved with and gives us a chance to help jobseekers on the way to a fulfilling career.
“Hopefully, many of them will now recognise the vast array of opportunities available to them in the Food and Drink Industry.”
Joanne Denney-Finch, chief executive, IGD, added: “The UK food and grocery industry is Britain’s biggest private sector employer.
“With that scale comes responsibility and we have a vital role to play in tackling youth unemployment by sharing our advice and experience.
“Feeding Britain’s Future is bringing the industry together to share the rules of the game with young people.
“We hope these young people from in and around Berwick will have made the most of this opportunity to develop their skills and grow their confidence.”
General Mills UK & Ireland is one of the fastest growing food companies in the market with a portfolio that includes a host of popular brands including Häagen-Dazs, Old El Paso, Green Giant, Betty Crocker, Nature Valley and Jus-Rol. It has been operating in this country since the 1950s.
