A £1.2 million grant has been received for the two housing projects which will create 56 new homes in Berwick.

Not-for-profit housing provider Four Housing has announced that it is investing a total of £8 million in 63 new homes in Northumberland, most of them in Berwick and the rest in Alnmouth.

Grants for two separate Berwick projects have been received from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) totalling over £1.2 million, with the remaining £6.8 million funded by social housing provider Four Housing itself.

At Springhill in Spittal work is already underway on a £4.7 million development with building contractor Gentoo Construction, comprising 40 new homes. There will be two and three-bedroom homes including 10 bungalows specifically for the over 55s.

These will be available to customers under the affordable rent and 50% shared ownership schemes offered by Four Housing. The project is due to be completed in March 2015.

A further 16 homes are under construction on North Road, in a £2.5 million investment on the site of the old Elizabethan pub. There will be 16 two-bed apartments which have been designed with the needs of older people in mind, incorporating a flexible layout and technology for the provision of telecare. All will be available at an affordable rent and are due to be ready in February 2015.

A third scheme is at Foxton Road in Alnmouth and represents a £756,000 investment.

Dawn Keightley, group director of operations at Four Housing, said: “This is a significant investment for Four Housing which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the Berwick area. There is a real housing need for affordable homes in Berwick and wider Northumberland, and we’re committed to addressing the housing shortfall – we strive to provide a range of homes that meet the needs of our customers at different stages of their lives.

“All of the homes will be modern and energy efficient to help our customers with rising energy costs.”

Allan Thompson, managing director of Gentoo Construction added: “We are delighted to be continuing our excellent working relationship with Four Housing, helping to deliver quality and affordable homes to the people of Berwick.”

When completed early next year the properties will be allocated by Northumberland Homefinder under Four Housing’s affordable rent and shared ownership schemes.
