Annual Tweed blessing gets seal of approval

The first line was cast in the 2013 Tweed salmon season this morning, when anglers gathered at Norham for the traditional blessing of the river.

Reverend Rob Kelsey of Norham conducted a service of hymns and prayers before Ronnie Hek, who has fished on the river for over 20 years, cast a line.

Ronnie and his fellow anglers are looking forward to a fruitful season, following several disappointing days made difficult by floods and heavy rain last year.

But, despite their early start, they suspect they were beaten to the first salmon of the year, as they noticed a seal that had made the journey of almost 11 miles upriver before the service started.
