THE success of stop smoking groups in two Tweedmouth pubs has prompted a third to follow suit.
A group has started meeting once a week at the Angel Inn, following the example set at the Queen's Head and Bonarsteads earlier this year.
Stop smoking specialist Helen Oldale of Northumberland Care Trust, said: "I am pleased to say that since the
article about the group at the Queen's Head I have been approached by the Angel Inn at Tweedmouth to run a similar group."
The smoking ban in Scottish pubs and next year's ban in England was the catalyst for customers in the Tweedmouth pubs to quit.
Although Berwick is not affected by the legislation, many residents regularly pop back and forth across the border for evenings out into areas where smoking is already restricted such as Kelso or Coldstream. This smoke-free experience has encouraged many people to kick the habit.
An initial enquiry from the staff at Bonarsteads who wanted help quitting led to the inception of the pub's first stop smoking group. This soon attracted interest from many other smokers who also wanted to join the group and as the group expanded it moved to the Queen's Head for its weekly meetings.
The group's relaxed and familiar setting attracted smokers that would not otherwise have sought help from stop smoking services at clinics and surgeries
After seeing such excellent results from this project, North Northumberland stop smoking services are keen to run further pub groups across Berwick and are calling for businesses to consider going smoke free ahead of the imminent legislation.
l The Angel group meets at 3.30pm every Thursday afternoon and new members are welcome. Give Helen a ring on (0790) 888705 or call Pauline at the Angel on (01289) 303030.
