THE Dewar's Lane Granary has been formally transferred to the ownership of Berwick Preservation Trust to pave the way for its £4.5 million redevelopment.

A substantial funding bid has been submitted to the Big Lottery Fund and a specific condition of this body is that the building is handed over to the trust.

The derelict building has been in council ownership since its demise as a commercial grain storage facility in the mid-1980's.

Council leader, Coun Isabel Hunter, said: "We are £1.4 million short at the moment but we're quite hopeful about the lottery bid and should know by the end of March whether it's been successful."

Berwick Preservation Trust have planning permission to transform the building into a heritage and cultural centre containing a cafe, exhibition space and a youth hostel.
