A POLISH war hero, who was caught drink-driving twice within the space of a year, has been disqualified from driving for three years by magistrates at Berwick.
Miroslaw Niewiarowski, who lives in Eastcliffe, Spittal, was also sentenced to 24 weeks imprisonment, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay £75 costs.
Niewiarowski, who is 37, pleaded guilty to two charges of excess alcohol, in May 2008 and May 2009, and on both occasions he was over, or close to being four times over the limit.
In 2008 he was stopped whilst driving a Vauxhall Astra in Dean Drive, Tweedmouth when he provided a sample which showed 432mg of alcohol in 100ml of urine. In 2009, again whilst driving an Astra on Spittal Hall Road, he provided a sample which showed 133mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath (the legal limit is 35mg).
In mitigation, defence solicitor Ian O'Rourke said Niewiarowski had served in Kosovo with the United Nations peacekeeping force, where he had been decorated for his service.
But when he returned home to Poland he found an empty house - his wife had left him - and so he came to Britain 'to build a new life.'
