A POLICE operation was launched on Thursday after reports of a woman threatening to set herself on fire in a house in a village near Berwick.

Officers werecalled to the property, the home of 5l year-old Liz McEwan who had been released on bail when she appeared at Newcastle Crown Court earlier in the week pending sentence after admitting a charge of conspiracy to supply heroin.

Anti police messages and the words 'I Am Innocent' had been painted on the walls. Firefighters and an ambulance crew were called to stand by.

A friend is understood to have persuaded her to leave the house and after being questioned by police she was later released.
