ODD socks and legwarmers helped pupils at Berwick's Holy Trinity First School raise more than £1,000 for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The children paid a pound to dress up in the peculiar attire for the day and also held a sale in the school hall.

Deputy head, Mary-Rose Blythe, said: "After seeing some of the images on the television, the children asked what could they do to help.

We all wore silly socks for the day and Year Four helped to organise the bring and buy sale.

"Books, clothes and toys donated by pupils and parents were on sale along with teas and coffees, a raffle and a challenging bird quiz. We hoped to raise about £300 and we would have been delighted with that," said Mrs Blythe.

"But we were just overwhelmed by everyone's generosity.
"We had no idea that we would raise such a magnificent amount so soon after Christmas."
