BERWICK Preservation Trust has been gifted a limited print of a Lowry picture that was painted looking down Marygate towards the Town Hall.

Cambridgeshire County Council, which owned the original, have just sold it for £530,000 and received permission to make a limited number of prints before the sale.

Ian Douglas, vice-chairman of Berwick Preservation Trust, said: "Because of the connection of Lowry to Berwick and because of the trust's involvement in the creation of the Lowry Trail around the town they are gifting a copy."

Mr Douglas, who is also chairman of the trust's Granary Development Project, added: "The granary project is proceeding to plan and this print will be on permanent feature there once it is open in early 2011.

"As well as a youth hostel and a bistro the granary will feature a major art exhibition floor and the building fabric itself will feature many artistic features and links to Berwick's industrial and artistic heritage."

He was presented with the print in a ceremony at Churchill College Cambridge by Cambridgeshire County Council last week.

The picture was painted in 1935 on one of Lowry's earlier visits to the town. The council acquired it in 1945 for 30 guineas but decided to auction it to raise money for the development of cultural activities within schools throughout Cambridgeshire.

Eighteen of Lowry's paintings are featured in the plaques of Berwick's Lowry trail which was created by the Preservation Trust.

Having just sent a letter to the editor, please ignore it, I now understand that the Lowry print will indeed be on display for the public, so my comment is quite inappropriate.

Many thanks
John
