A PILOT from Kirknewton escaped serious injury after the microlight he was flying ran out of fuel and crash-landed.

The 60 year-old pilot was taken to hospital after the crash at Hayton, near Retford, Nottinghamshire, on Tuesday morning.

He was travelling to Gamston, Nottinghamshire, when the two-seater microlight came down in a field at about 11.30am.

The man, who has not been identified, was conscious and breathing when found and was being treated for minor injuries at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "He appears to have run out of fuel before crashing in a field in Hayton."

Paramedics, the fire service and the county's air ambulance were also called to the incident. Nobody else was hurt.

It has not yet been confirmed which airfield he took off from but a spokesman for Borders Gliding Club at Milfield said the aircraft had not taken off from there.
