A HOLE in the road suddenly appeared in Belford on Saturday when the tarmac collapsed to reveal a two foot deep gap.

Locals shone a torch down the hole and it appeared to get even deeper as it followed the slope down West Street.

"It was so deep I was able to stick my leg down it without touching the bottom," said local writer Steve Newman, pictured right showing the size of the hole.

"The general consensus appears to be that it must have been an old drain and the wet weather washed away the soil underneath causing the surface to collapse but no one seems to know just yet."
