ONE third of the roof of Spittal's Jubilee Club was blown off in a northerly gale which battered Berwick and the north Northumberland coast on Friday.

Gusts of over 80mph hit the town, sending huge waves high over the top of Berwick Pier.

In spite of the damage, the club was open for business in 24 hours.
Club chairman Robert Richardson said: "The incident happened just a couple of hours before we were due to open on the Friday evening.

Apparently the gale got under a section of roof and it just lifted off. Fortunately, the old roof was still on and it held firm. The new section was put on 18 months ago. I am very pleased that nobody was injured.

"As soon as the storm eased on Saturday we carried out a series of safety checks and we were able to have the club ready for a busy Saturday night."

Firemen from Berwick were called out to secure a sign on the MKM building which had broken loose.

The storm was the worst to hit the area for more than a decade but Berwick escaped the snow which fell in many parts of the region.
