FOUR men have been jailed following a violent fracas in Berwick town centre which left police officers seriously injured.
Newcastle Crown Court heard police found themselves outnumbered after being called to a disturbance outside the Cashmere nightclub in Golden Square in the early hours of August 5.
By the time the incident ended, PC Graeme Hull and DC Keith Turnbull
both lay unconscious and seriously injured on the ground after being kicked and punched in the head. The court was told PC Hull is unlikely to return to his police career and DC Turnbull spent six and a half weeks recovering from his injuries before returning to work.
Paul Calder Jnr, 19, of Sea View, Berwick admitted charges of grievous bodily harm and assault and was sent to a young offenders' institution indefinitely. He must serve a minimum four years before he may be considered for parole.
His father, Paul Calder Snr, 44, of the same address, was jailed for 10 months after admitting affray. Andrew Baxter, 40, of Highcliffe, was jailed for 16 months after admitting affray and assault.
Alan Craig, 32, of Grantshouse, Berwickshire, was cleared of affray but jailed for six months after being found guilty of escape from police custody. His wife, Erin Craig, 21, was given a three month suspended sentence with 12 months supervision after being found guilty of aiding and abetting her husband's escape from a police van.
