BERWICK-born Cpl Richie Dunse will be spending Christmas away from home, working alongside Britain's coalition partners at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

Richie, whose parents Margaret and Jock live in Highcliffe, Spittal, is currently serving as part of 83 EAG (RAF) ensuring that the skies above Afghanistan are safe for aircrew to carry out their operational duties.

Richie is an air traffic controller, usually based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, but has swapped roles for the next four months to work in the Combines Air Ops Centre at the US Air Base in the Middle East, working 12 hour shifts alongside his American, Australian and Canadian counterparts.

Richie's 14 year-old son, Ricky, also lives in Berwick, and attends Berwick High School, while Richie's home is in Shrewsbury which he shares with Helen, Ethan and Kiera.

He hopes to get back to Berwick in February to see family and friends while he is on R&R.
