POLICE are planning to use Berwick's state of the art CCTV system to reduce crime and disorder over the Christmas period.
Officers will undertake a number of proactive operations in the lead up to the festive break to tackle anti-social behaviour and reduce crime.
A police spokesman said: "We are hoping to reduce the number of people affected by crime and disorder and make this an enjoyable time of the year for everyone."
There are currently nine CCTV cameras in the town centre which are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week from the police station.
Each camera has the ability to use the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition System) which is linked to the Police National Commuter and can automatically check vehicle details and information markers.
"The digital system is state of the art and would not be out of place in Newcastle or Sunderland, we use it to investigate and detect crime and this year's figures show we are making a significant impact," added the spokesman.
