AT the end of last month Berwick Rotary Club took part in the first leg of a youth exchange arranged with the Rotary Club of Tres Arroyos in the province of Buenos Aires.

The Argentinian group consisted of six young ladies of sixth form age who wished to see how their contemporaries were educated in England.

Their leaders, Dr Eduardo Cansado and Senora Alejandra Ajargo, had visited Berwick in 1993 and the girls were also visiting the region to improve their English.

Their Tweedside hosts gave them a busy time beginning with a visit to the unique Cromwellian Parish Church.

This was followed by the two-kilometre circuit of Berwick's famous walls. Next stop was the gaol in the macabre upper reaches of the 18th century Guildhall.

Less macabre and more restful was a civic reception hosted by the Mayor, Coun Flora Simpson.

Sunday was spent on a visit to Edinburgh for sight-seeing and shopping in Princes Street.

Monday was 'schools day' when the group saw at first hand the curricula and facilities of both Berwick High School and Longridge Towers.

In the evening the Argentinian group gave a 'thank-you' presentation about their country to an audience of about 60 Rotarians and guests, which included the Mayor.

Departure the next day was preceded by a viewing of another unique Berwick feature – the Berwick Youth Project which has given varied, vital and valuable help to up to 1800 young people in the town and surrounding area.

The group was accommodated in the homes of Berwick Rotarians and thus saw English family life as well as the cultural, scholastic and historical features of the area.

Berwick youngsters are now looking forward to visiting Argentina.
A Berwick Rotary Club spokesman said they wished to thank the many people and organisations for helping it to create a wonderful visit.
