A NEW scheme giving pensioners and the disabled free off-peak bus travel anywhere in the country starts on Tuesday, April 1.

The free national travel is an extension of the free local bus travel scheme launched by the government in 2006 and is backed by a £212m government investment during the next financial year.

Labour Parliamentary spokesperson Alan Strickland said: "Local transport for the elderly is a really important issue here in Berwick.

"I'm very pleased that the government is extending free bus travel to those over the age of 60 and residents with disabilities.

"This means that pass-holders visiting the area can use local services, and that people from Berwick can use their pass if they are visiting relatives or on holiday in other areas of the country."

Local residents who haven't already made arrangements for their new pass, should contact Berwick Borough Council on (01289) 301811.
