PETITIONS signed by more than 1500 people opposed to two proposed housing developments in Beadnell have been drawn up.

The petitions collected by the Save Beadnell Association were presented at Northumberland County Council's planning office in Berwick.

Jim Williamson, of the Save Beadnell Association, said: "We're pleased to have managed to get so many signatur
es considering how small a village Beadnell is."

The recently formed residents' group is protesting about plans for three luxury four-bedroom houses on the seafront next to the Haven and a four bedroom mansion at White Rock further along Harbour Road.

The petition against the Haven proposal was signed by 1275 visitors and 380 residents, defined as those owning properties and paying council tax, and their families.

A separate petition for the White Rock proposal was signed by 1196 visitors and 339 residents.

Beadnell Parish Council also decided to oppose the White Rock proposal at a packed meeting in the WI Hall on Wednesday last week.

It follows the parish's earlier decision to signal their opposition to the Haven proposal.

Mr Williamson said: "We're encouraged by the parish council's decision on both applications but we realise it's not good to have this split in the village."

The residents' group hopes the show of strength of local feeling will also influence members of the county council's north area committee who made a site visit earlier this week.

The Beadnell Harbour Fishermen's Society, which is behind the proposals, wants to use the proceeds from the sale of the homes to fund an annuity to fund the upkeep of the harbour walls, annual dredging, other maintenance and insurance costs.

The Save Beadnell Association was formed with the aim of preventing further 'insensitive and inappropriate' developments in the village.

It has claimed Beadnell is in danger of becoming the holiday home capital of England. Since 1999 the number of houses in the village has almost doubled and now nearly 64 per cent of housing is second/holiday homes.

It wants both proposed sites to be registered as village greens and says it has made a formal offer to purchase them and the harbour.
But Beadnell Harbour Fishermen's Society, insists a realistic, funded offer has not been made so intends to press ahead with its own plans.

The harbour was gifted to the Beadnell fishing families by Sir John Craster in 1951, when the families formed Beadnell Harbour Fishermen's Society. In 1974, Sir John gifted the society land at The Haven and White Rock.

A final decision is expected to be taken by Northumberland County Council's north area planning committee at its September meeting.
