Dickensian Market declared ‘the best yet’

BERWICK’S Dickensian Market on Sunday has been hailed as the best yet with visitors turning up in their thousands to soak up the festive atmosphere and stock up on Christmas presents.

More than 40 stallholders, many of whom were dressed in Dickensian costume, lined Marygate and the Buttermarket selling a vast range of delicious provisions, arts and crafts and much more.

Viv Robson of Berwick Events Group, which organised the event for the sixth time, said: “It was an absolutely tremendous day. We were thrilled with the turn-out and the traders all had an excellent day. We’ve already had several of them wanting to book their stall for next year!

“It’s difficult to put a precise figure on the number of visitors but last year we estimated around 10,000 and the town seemed to be even busier this year so we’re very pleased.”

Traders reported business being at its briskest in the morning when the bright sunshine encouraged shoppers along but a chill wind blowing down the high street in the afternoon reduced footfall.

A special attraction this year was Cinderella-style horse-drawn carriage rides courtesy of the Cornhill Carriage Company which took passengers from the top of Marygate across the Royal Tweed Bridge and back.

Street entertainment included circus acts, a magician, unicyclist and stilt-walking flamingos, while there were also a range of catering stalls, trampolines for the children to use up excess energy on and music to enjoy on a specially erected stage in front of the town hall steps.

Santa was kept busy throughout the day at his grotto in the town hall, while the venue also served Victorian afternoon teas and gave visitors the chance to have their photo taken in Victorian costume.

The event also provided a welcome pre-Christmas boost for many town centre businesses.
