ENTERTAINMENT at Paxton's festival of chamber music takes on a Russian guise on Sunday, July 20, when the University of York's Music Department will give an afternoon performance of Stravinsky's dramatic music theatre piece 'The Soldier's Tale' in the grounds of Paxton House (5pm), immediately followed by a concert by the world renowned Russian based St Petersburg Quartet at 7.30pm.
The Soldier's Tale tells of a soldier who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for a magic violin, with which he hopes to win the hand of a princess. It features a cast of four with a music ensemble of seven. Tickets are £5 and there is no charge for concessions.
The St Petersburg Quartet, on a one-off visit to Scotland, will play a programme of Russian classics, including Borodin's well known second quartet whose beautiful slow movement theme was used in the musical Kismet.
The festival, which opens this weekend, features other international artists such as the French pianist Cédric Tiberghien (18th) and Russian born violinist Alina Ibragimova (19th) The programme also features our own Borders-based fiddler Shona Mooney (22nd) who brings her trio and some talented young borders musicians for a Paxton first; Sax Ecosse, who recently delighted the pupils of Cornhill, Norham and Greenlaw Primary schools and young violist Jessica Beeston (23rd) with Andrew Johnston, piano.
Next weekend, look out for the Edinburgh Quartet with Nicholas Ashton, piano (24th), the Hebrides Ensemble (25th), Primrose Piano Quartet (26th) and Avison Ensemble (27th).
