NORHAM singer Lizzie Bell is going back to her roots with what promises to be an unmissable night of jazz at the Barrels Alehouse tomorrow night.

Backed by a trio of top-class musicians, Lizzie will be lending her sumptuous tones to songs by the likes of Billie Holiday, Neil Young and Bob Dylan.

"There will be plenty old-time jazz along with a jazz take on some modern songs," explains the 31-year-old, who last year supported well-known folk musician Martha Tilston at the alehouse.

"I've been going through old albums and picking out my favourites."
Lizzie's pedigree as an artist is considerable, having performed backing vocals for the legendary Dana Gillespie.

She has also supported Boo Hewerdine, a musician who has written hits for, among others, Natalie Imbruglia and The Corrs.

When one considers her background, it is hardly surprising that Lizzie should take to music so readily.

"My family used to run the Café Club in central London," she explains.

"It was listed as one of the best places to watch jazz in London. I was always watching bands and taking everything in. It gave me the chance to meet well-established jazz musicians like Ian Shaw and Johnny Miller. I was totally absorbed by the atmosphere. That whole underground scene is what I want to get back to.

"It's where my heart is and Barrels really suits that as a venue."
Folk singer-guitarist Alastair Kilgour is first on stage tomorrow, while Saint Monday are also on the bill. Doors open at 8pm and it's £5 entry.

"Some people think of jazz as being all 'boopidy dap', but it's not," laughs Lizzie.

"It's going to be a really cool evening – really laid back." www.myspace.com/lizziebellmusic.
