FOUR local bands appeared at the Red Lion in Berwick last Friday and the number of fans crammed into the bar to see the bands perform was proof that the music scene in Berwick is as healthy as ever.
The evening started with a short solo performance by guitarist/vocalist Brendan Portues before he was joined on stage by guitarist Liam Portues and bass player Xennon Easton to play together as Espionage of the Loc. The trio were drafted in at the
last minute to replace local band 'Klyptonite' who were forced to cancel their appearance.
Espionage drummer Calum Knox had been unable to join his band mates at short notice due to work commitments, however, the trio provided an excellent acoustic performance filled with the funk pop melodies and vocal harmonies that have helped earn the band their excellent reputation as one of the best bands in Berwick.
Next up were Eyemouth band Scope returning to the Berwick music scene after a lengthy break. Compromising of bass player Paul Sinclair, guitarist/singer Lewie Harrison and drummer Matt Carroll, Scope were warmly received by the crowd and look set to become a more regular fixture on the Berwick music scene.
The last of the evening's three support bands appeared in the form of alt-rockers Ditch Your Side Kicks featuring the very talented Anna Lannon on drums, Robert Wilkinson on bass, Daniel Cox on guitar and Peter Lannon on guitar/vocals. DYSK entertained with some classic crowd favourites as well as a host of new material which showed the bands impressive growth as both songwriters and musicians.
Headline band The Warehouse Announcement had the audience in raptures from the moment they took to the stage. Following on from their recent performance as the co-headline act of the Spittal Seaside Festival, the Warehouse boys have definitely been working hard. No doubt to prepare them for their forthcoming tour of America.
Guitarist Scott Courtney confirms "We're practising twice a week and a lot of the lads are involved in other bands so we're playing a lot. We've got gigs coming up in Edinburgh, Eyemouth and Berwick within the next few weeks and the American road trip will start sometime in early January.
"We've also got several dates that we're in the process of confirming including some with The Joe Mangels which we're really looking forward too"
Lead singer of The Warehouse Announcement Paul Sinclair delivered heart-felt vocals with the raw power and emotion to rival that of legendary vocalist Brian Johnson of AC/DC and the other band members backed him to the hilt. Multi-instrumentalist Bob Laidlaw (drums) locked in tight with bass player Steven Walker to provide a solid pounding backbone for the band, whilst guitarists Scott Courtney and Michael Goldsworthy unleashed their riff-heavy onslaught as the band tore through their set with seemingly endless energy. A special mention must go to Courtney for his mastery of rock star poses.
At one point during the performance the PA system actually started to catch fire but the band were so involved in the music they barely noticed. Local musician and photographer Alan Turnbull witnessed the events taking place and explained: "I was down the front of the crowd taking photos of the band and could smell electrical burning but couldn't see anything obvious so I just carried on. Next thing I noticed was smoke creeping out of the PA speaker right next to my head.
"Lewie from Scope leapt in and removed the speaker from the building before things got out of hand. The band just carried on playing; I think Paul was the only one who had noticed what was going on.
"It was lucky that we spotted the problem and took care of it so soon, no one was hurt and there weren't actually any naked flames in sight. I think it'll be one of those rock 'n' roll stories that the band will look back on and laugh in years to come. Maybe not Lewie though, it was his PA speaker!"
At the end of the night ears were ringing, bodies were sweaty but everyone was happy they had witnessed an excellent evening of the finest in local rock music.
