SOPRANO Catherine Bott makes a welcome return to the Guildhall, in Berwick, for a magnificent concert of Italian baroque music on January 9 at 7.30pm.

The opulent surroundings of late 17th century Rome were the backdrop for some of the most significant musical developments in the high Baroque.

The city was also graced by the presence of Arcangelo Corelli, whose carefully honed music was to bec
ome the ideal model for generations of composers following him.

This concert features trio and solo sonatas from his opp 1, 2 and 5 and cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Arianna and Augellin, Vago e Canoro, in which the Avison Ensemble is joined by celebrated soprano and broadcaster, Catherine Bott.

This concert is the first of a series of pre-recording concerts, as the Ensemble embarks upon its new challenge to record the complete works of Corelli in anticipation of the tercentenary of Corelli's death in 2013.
Corelli was, in chronological terms, the 'musical grandfather' of Charles Avison.

The Avison Ensemble uses period instruments to recreate the distinctive 'sound world' that Avison would have known.

Tickets for Treasures of Rome cost £10 from The Maltings box office, or will be available on the evening at the door.
