FORMER world strongman Geoff Capes is to be the guest at Berwick Rotary Club's major fundraising event at Horncliffe on August 30-31.
The event, co-organised with the Robson family, from Chain Bridge Honey Farm, will raise money to provide water supplies in Burkina Faso, one of the world's poorest countries.
Last year, the rotary club teamed up with Northumbrian Water in a four ye
ar project which will save hundreds of lives.
Geoff Capes, a former Olympic and Commonwealth Games shot putter, will judge a special tug of war competition which will add to the many attractions at the fun weekend.
The former policeman achieved fame through his strongman success, initially on the Highland Games circuit and then through televised World's Strongest Man contests.
Entries for the tug of war are now being invited from clubs and organisations throughout the area and should be sent to secretary Bryon Longbone c/o Longbone's shop at 3 Walkergate (telephone 307534).
Main focus of the Sunday will be a large display of vintage tractors and cars. There will be music by the J J Johnson Band, making an appearance for the third year in succession, and also by local entertainers.
There will also be musical entertainment on the Saturday in the showfield's main marquee, while the Johnson Band is also scheduled to make a guest appearance at Coldstream.
"The weekend has developed into a great event and, of course, the money raised is going to a very good cause," said Mr Longbone.
"We complain about tough times and a difficult summer but the people in Burkina Faso suffer tough times every day. We are pleased to be able to help them."
The rotary club is also appealing for old mobile phones which will be collected and sent off with money again going to charity.
