WHEN the Scottish Borders Community Orchestra assemble for their Spring Concert on Saturday, May 24, at 7.30pm in the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels, they will pay tribute to Peter Reeve, former leader of the brass section.
Peter did much to develop the brass section from the early days of the orchestra in 2000 until his untimely death in 2006. It is with great pleasure that the SBCO has invited Peter's grandson, Ben Reeve, to be their soloist for the Trumpet Concerto
by Alexander Arutiunian.
Ben, who was inspired by his grandfather, completed a BMus degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and now teaches in Hackney.
The concert will begin with the orchestra playing The Sanguine Fan by Edward Elgar. This rarely played piece of ballet music is the choice of guest conductor, Robert Dick from Edinburgh. His choice has generated interest among Elgar enthusiasts and also from the Elgar Society who have made a donation towards the hire of the music. Some have even suggested that this may be the premiere of this work in Scotland. A delightful piece composed in 1917 to benefit war charities — it surely deserves to be heard more often than that!
Here is an evening with the perfect mix of new, little known and very familiar.
The orchestra, with its Leader, Lucy Cowan, will bring the evening to a close with The New World Symphony by Antonín Dvorák.
Tickets will be on sale at the door or may be reserved by phoning (01573) 228464 or download a booking form from the website www.sbco.org.uk
